How To Get Into Modeling For Guys

Over the years, I've meet a few male models who've done some fashion and runway modeling for a number of big names like Calvin Klein and Burberry.
If you think you've got the look to be a fashion model then you only need to
  • get your photos in front of modeling scout
  • OR attend an open call
While that sounds simple, only a few men actually actually make the cut and will be represented by a modeling agency.
A model scout will tell if you have it it or don't--it's just that straightforward. And if you don't, then you'd be wise to heed that expert advice and move on to your other desires. It's a picky industry, so don't get your feelings hurt. However, if you really feel that you do have something special to offer, then you should never stop following your dreams.

Basic Male Model Size Requirements

For men's runway and fashion editorial modeling, the preferred body dimensions for guys is as follows:
  • Height: 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m) to 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m)
  • Waist: 28–32 in (71.12–81.28 cm)
  • Chest: 36–40 in (91.44–101.60 cm)
However, runway and fashion editorial are not the only types of modeling gigs in the modeling industry. There are other kinds of male modeling that do stray from these basic body requirements depending on the needs of the project. However, high-fashion, male modeling is typically going to fit into the above requirements.

Don't Be Fooled By Modeling Scams

You should never have to pay anyone to get into modeling. If you've got talent, someone will pay you, rest assured.
Every now and then I hear radio ads for these fake modeling agencies and schools who want to invite you to a free open call at some hotel in the city. These things are a scam. Basically, they tell everyone who comes in that they've got the look, and that he or she will need to fork over several hundreds if not thousands of dollars for professional comp cards, modeling school, etc. It's a joke.
The most credible modeling agencies like to discover new talent by looking at photos of models without make-up that haven't been retouched; they want to see the true you.

How To Take Photos

You will need to get some photos taken of yourself to submit to modeling agencies. You don't need (nor should you get) professional photos. Agencies want to see the real you.
The photo shots you need to take are basic, and agencies will typically not want you send them more than 4 shots. So to take 4 shots, you should be able to do this in less than 10 minutes, and you can use your iPhone as your camera (or another high pixel camera phone).
The 4 shots you need are as followings (and I'm using the Ford Models photo submission guidelines as the standard here, as I think it will apply for most agencies). If you wanted to do a 5th photo, then I'd recommend an underwear or swimsuit shot.

Photo Requirements

Your photos should meet the following requirements:
  • No professional photos
  • No makeup
  • Don't pose
  • Background should be plain wall or white sheet
  • Clothing should be solid color, form fitting shirt or tank top and form fitting jeans

Submit Your Photos Or Attend Casting Call

if you're ready to submit your photos or attend a casting call, then here are a few resources to get you started.

Major Agencies

For submitting your photos, I'd definitely submit them to the major agencies, like Ford Models and Wilhelmina. In addition, you can check their websites for details on the availability of open casting calls.

Models.com

Second, I would setup a free online portfolio at models.com. This is one of the most highly trafficked modeling sites on the web, and tons of other top modeling agencies use this site to do online scouting for new models.
Plus, this site is just a great overall resource for the modeling industry. You can learn a lot by reading through some of the other model profiles and blogs, in addition to discovering some of the smaller modeling agencies out there who represent some very well known men. One of my favorite features is browsing through the Top 50 Male Models section where you can look at some of the rising stars in the industry.
